Opening iPhone photos on Windows
Windows often cannot open HEIC without a paid extension. JPG opens straight away.

To stop your iPhone saving HEIC in the first place, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible.
How the conversion works
A small decoder that runs in your browser reads the HEIC photo and saves it as a JPG at the quality you chose. It loads the first time you convert, then runs on your own computer. The photo is never sent anywhere.
