Rename a whole folder of files in one go

Find and replace, add numbers and dates, tidy up spaces and case, and see every new name before anything changes. The files stay on your computer the whole time, and you can undo.

Renames in place in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera on a computer. Other browsers get a script. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

Features

What it does, and what it will not do

Live preview
Every new name is shown next to the old one as you type, with the changed part highlighted.
Many kinds of rule
Find and replace with regular expressions, name patterns with dates, running numbers, clean-up, case, prefix and suffix.
Name clash protection
If a new name would replace another file, or two files would get the same name, the tool blocks the rename and shows which files clash.
Undo and a log
Undo the last rename right after it, and download a CSV of what changed.
Subfolders and filters
Include subfolders, search the list, show one file type, and untick any file to leave it alone.
Extensions stay safe
Rules apply to the name before the last dot, so .jpg and .pdf endings are not touched unless you choose to.
Runs on your computer
The browser renames the files in place. No upload, no zip to download, and no file limit set by this tool beyond 5,000 at a time.
A script when it cannot rename
In browsers that cannot rename files, download a script for Windows or for Mac and Linux, and a CSV list.

How it works

Rename files in four steps

  1. Open the folder

Choose the folder that holds the files. Your browser asks you to allow changes to that one folder.

  2. Set the rules

Pick a ready-made rule, or fill in the sections you need and leave the rest alone.

  3. Check the preview

Read down the After column. Any clash is flagged and the rename button stays off until it is fixed.

  4. Rename

Press the rename button and confirm. The list refreshes, and Undo is there if you change your mind.

Uses

When a batch rename saves an evening

Camera and phone photos

Turn IMG_0412.JPG and DSC_8841.JPG into names that say when they were taken, such as 2026-03-14_001.jpg.

Scanned documents

Number a folder of scans or add a year or client code in front of them so they sort properly.

Downloaded files

Strip the same junk out of a batch of downloads, such as " (1)" or a website name, with one find and replace.

Files for uploading

Lowercase everything, swap spaces for dashes and drop accents before uploading to a website or server.

How local bulk renaming works

Most online renamers make you upload every file, then download a zip of renamed copies. This one skips that. You give the page access to a folder, it reads the file names, and it asks the browser to rename each file where it already sits. Your files are never copied or sent anywhere, which is why there is no waiting on an upload.

The rules run in a fixed order for every file: cut characters, find and replace, clean-up, the case change, the name pattern, the number, then the prefix and suffix, and last the extension. The part after the last dot is set aside during all of this unless you choose to include it, and it is put back on the end.

Renaming rules explained

RuleWhat it doesExample
Find and replaceReplaces every match in the name. Can match capital letters exactly, or use a regular expressionIMG_ becomes goa-
Name patternBuilds the name from tokens: {name}, {n}, {date}, {time}, {year}, {month}, {day}, {folder}, {ext}{date}_{n} gives 2026-03-14_001
NumberingAdds a running number with your own start, step, digits and orderinvoice.pdf becomes 001-invoice.pdf
Clean upSpaces to dashes or underscores, no special characters or accents, trimmed endsMy Photo (1)!.jpg becomes my-photo-1.jpg
Change caselowercase, UPPERCASE, Title Case or Sentence caseholiday photo.jpg becomes Holiday Photo.jpg
Add or cut textA prefix, a suffix, and characters cut from the start or end2026- in front of invoice.pdf
ExtensionKeep it, make it lowercase or uppercase, or change it.JPG becomes .jpg

To remove text, use find with an empty replace box. Every rule is optional: leave a section alone and it does nothing. A dot next to a section title shows which ones are in use.

Checking before you rename

The list shows every file with its new name beside it, with the part that changed highlighted. A file that would clash is marked in red with the reason, and the rename button stays off until you fix it or untick the file. You can search the list, show only one file type, and untick any file you want to leave alone.

When you are happy, press Rename. The tool asks you to confirm the count, renames the files, and offers Undo and a log of what changed. If the browser refuses a file, you get that file name and the reason.
