When PNG is the better format
Screenshots and diagrams
A screenshot saved as JPG can look fuzzy near letters. Converting it to PNG stops it getting worse each time it is edited and saved.
Design and print software
Some tools ask for PNG. Converting first saves a failed upload.
Starting a cut-out
PNG is the format that can hold a see-through background. Convert here, then remove the background in an editor.

Choose PNG when you need exact pixels or transparency. Choose JPG when small file size matters more. To go the other way, use the PNG to JPG converter.
How the conversion works
Your browser opens the JPG, draws it on a canvas at its original size, and saves that canvas as a PNG. All of this happens on your own computer. The file is never sent anywhere, which is why there is nothing to wait for besides the conversion itself.
